This question is open to all Italians in America? Greetings! You are an Italian who travels to America or USA. If you are going to write a letter back to your family in Italy. What would be the content of your letter? What will you say about America, living in America and what are the things that you will missed about in Italy. Thanks :)
A question for Italians (both America, England, and the old country): do you love England? I do!? I hope a lot of you say yes. I would break my heart if you said otherwise. You have your opinions. It's just that there's so much in common between the two countries. I mean I sound a little crazy, but I know what I'm saying. Oh, sorry, I meant to include the USA as well.
Since when did Italians in America become white? I even hear them saying it themselves. I'm a real Italian like from Italy. I'm not white at all. I look more hispanic than white. When Italians first came to America, it was the white people who clowned them for... well, not being white like them. Why did they accept being called white. White people don't even like me, I'm not calling myself white. How could I be white, I'm not atheist.
I'M ITALIAN AND I WANNA LIVE IN AMERICA . .HOW CAN I DO? WHAT'S A GREEN CARD? I'M ITALIAN AND I WANT TO LIVE IN AMERICA . . . I'VE HEARD BY MY FRIENDS ABOUT GREEN CARD , SPONSOR . . WHAT ARE THEY ???? PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!
How did the Italians that emigrated to America in the early 1900s live? What kind of jobs would they get? Where would they live if they had little money? How did they get their jobs? (Were they self employed, working on the streets?) Sources please, if you can. -Edit- Please emphasise HOW the ITALIANS specifically lived, and especially HOW the Italian males would come to get their jobs.
On what basis would there be anti America sentiment by Italians? I am speaking of the oft suggested notion that that figured in the Amanda Knox trial. I have also heard perhaps it was due to the fact that the murder took place in a small town and they are not as open to foreigners as those in large cities.. Still given the high percentage of Italian Americans and visits by Americans to Italy each year......
Italians in America? If I went to America would there be loads of Italians, Which parts, I want to go there one day, I'm Sicilian/Italian.. Also I heard Brazil and Argentina have loads more Italians than America there..
Are Italians White if you are or are not what do you consider? In the 18th century to the early 20th century Italians coming to America where considered non-Anglo. Today there is no check box for people of Italian descent if your an Italian from Latin America you can identify your self as Hispanic..... So what are Italians in america left to consider them selves? And if your Italian what do you identify your self as?
Are Italians in Italy as annoying as the ones in America? I find many of them to be very annoying, loud, obnoxious, and they're always rubbing the fact that they are Italian in your face, I mean, the ones I've encountered must have mentioned the fact that they are Italian to the point where I was like, yes, yea, I get it, you're Italian, lol! Anyways, I was just curious if that was just an Italian American thing or should I say a Sicilian American thing because most of the Italians in America came originally from Sicily and they have a different culture there then they do on the mainland of Italy, at least that's what I've heard.
Ethnic whites, Italians in America? I've noticed often that you have "ethnic" whites, whites who have a very tan or olive complexion, dark hair and eyes, and many Italians here in the USA that tend to be MORE racist than their light anglo counterparts? My question is why when those same people (the blonde hair/blue eyed Apple pie image types) likely see them as a piece of crap? Same with poor whites, working class whites, and lower-middle class whites. Its obvious most of the rich whites see them as a piece of crap and look down on them so why do these lower class whites try so hard to be like them when its evident that they are systematically and purposely brought down? And why are so many Italians racist when their ancestors were discrminated against when they immigrated to America? And why do the darker complexed europeans try so hard to be the blonde hair all-american apple pie image and act like that when they know they don't fit in? Food for thought. When I say "ethnic" whites I'm generally speaking talking about "white" people with mixed blood and ancestry, white people who have a very latino, middle eastern/indian look, that kind of thing. Same with a lot of medittereaneans. GrapeMSH- some aren't racist but a lot of them can be. There's a lot of self hate especially the ones who have the darker features that's all I'm saying. I do know for a fact Italy itself is a multicultural and even multiracial at one point in heritage. My mother's Italian (and part Irish) so I do know. Yes Linah H I do agree with you there
Why are the Italians in America way more darker than one's in Italy? I mean Paulie Malignaggi looks way more Arab or something, than a lot of italians i have seen (who live in italy): http://www.notifight.com/artman/uploads/malignaggifarina.jpg Are they mixed with other things? I am Indian, (northwest Punjabi): And see my little brother: http://s232.photobucket.com/albums/ee237/kadot_e/?action=view&current=9926_178533004049_508949049_3869733.jpg&newest=1 And he has fairer eyes and skin than a lot of Italian-Americans and please don't say we are mixed (we got blood genetic tests to prove that we are not mixed and we are 100% south asian) Blue eyes or colored eyes and hair etc are just all because of a genetic defect. So does anyone know why italian americans are darker? @ Afnan that is my brother, you can add me on facebook and see the other pictures if you don't believe me. Mate, I lived in south India they were all rich and they were not good looking you cannot just name actresses etc why would I lie anyway? I am Indian myself, i would love it if they all looked like that but i am just telling the reality - go and live in south india then tell me as for the khan's they have always been big in bollywood anyway - but the hindus are just as huge such as hrithik roshan and akshay kumar so what's your point? Like I said I lived there, buy a plane ticket and visit there and go to the rich areas and schools etc trust me none of them look like that. And also your bangladeshi so why do you always pretend to be indian? you never ask questions about bangladeshis? @ Afnan this is a typical middle class - private school in South India - Tamil Nadu and Bangalore: http://www.kastda.org/image/kalutara-convent-2.jpg So shutup dude and get a reality check
Is there a way to watch Disney Channel Italy, or simply its shows dubbed in Italian, in America? Ok, so I really want to watch more TV in Italian, but here in America everything is in either English or Spanish, not Italian. Any way for me to watch Disney Channel Italy OR the shows dubbed in Italian? Or through the Internet? I heard you can watch Disney Channel shows online but I looked through their Italian page and couldn't find anything.

For the Italians in America… help translation? Please, the translation of this poetry from the English language to that Italian! Impossible To Tell By Robert Pinsky Listen to Robert Hass and in memory of Elliot Gilbert Slow dulcimer, gavotte and bow, in autumn, Bash› and his friends go out to view the moon; In summer, gasoline rainbow in the gutter, The secret courtesy that courses like ichor Through the old form of the rude, full-scale joke, Impossible to tell in writing. "Bash›" He named himself, "Banana Tree": banana After the plant some grateful students gave him, Maybe in appreciation of his guidance Threading a long night through the rules and channels Of their collaborative linking-poem Scored in their teacher's heart: live, rigid, fluid Like passages etched in a microscopic cicuit. Elliot had in his memory so many jokes They seemed to breed like microbes in a culture Inside his brain, one so much making another It was impossible to tell them all: In the court-culture of jokes, a top banana. Imagine a court of one: the queen a young mother, Unhappy, alone all day with her firstborn child And her new baby in a squalid apartment Of too few rooms, a different race from her neighbors. She tells the child she's going to kill herself. She broods, she rages. Hoping to distract her, The child cuts capers, he sings, he does imitations Of different people in the building, he jokes, He feels if he keeps her alive until the father Gets home from work, they'll be okay till morning. It's laughter versus the bedroom and the pills. What is he in his efforts but a courtier? Impossible to tell his whole delusion. In the first months when I had moved back East From California and had to leave a message On Bob's machine, I used to make a habit Of telling the tape a joke; and part-way through, I would pretend that I forgot the punchline, Or make believe that I was interrupted— As though he'd be so eager to hear the end He'd have to call me back. The joke was Elliot's, More often than not. The doctors made the blunder That killed him some time later that same year. One day when I got home I found a message On my machine from Bob. He had a story About two rabbis, one of them tall, one short, One day while walking along the street together They see the corpse of a Chinese man before them, And Bob said, sorry, he forgot the rest. Of course he thought that his joke was a dummy, Impossible to tell—a dead-end challenge. But here it is, as Elliot told it to me: The dead man's widow came to the rabbis weeping, Begging them, if they could, to resurrect him. Shocked, the tall rabbi said absolutely not. But the short rabbi told her to bring the body Into the study house, and ordered the shutters Closed so the room was night-dark. Then he prayed Over the body, chanting a secret blessing Out of Kabala. "Arise and breathe," he shouted; But nothing happened. The body lay still. So then The little rabbi called for hundreds of candles And danced around the body, chanting and praying In Hebrew, then Yiddish, then Aramaic. He prayed In Turkish and Egyptian and Old Galician For nearly three hours, leaping about the coffin In the candlelight so that his tiny black shoes Seemed not to touch the floor. With one last prayer Sobbed in the Spanish of before the Inquisition He stopped, exhausted, and looked in the dead man's face. Panting, he raised both arms in a mystic gesture And said, "Arise and breathe!" And still the body Lay as before. Impossible to tell In words how Elliot's eyebrows flailed and snorted Like shaggy mammoths as—the Chinese widow Granting permission—the little rabbi sang The blessing for performing a circumcision And removed the dead man's foreskin, chanting blessings In Finnish and Swahili, and bathed the corpse From head to foot, and with a final prayer In Babylonian, gasping with exhaustion, He seized the dead man's head and kissed the lips And dropped it again and leaping back commanded, "Arise and breathe!" The corpse lay still as ever. At this, as when Bash›'s disciples wind Along the curving spine that links the renga Across the different voices, each one adding A transformation according to the rules Of stasis and repetition, all in order And yet impossible to tell beforehand, Elliot changes for the punchline: the wee Rabbi, still panting, like a startled boxer, Looks at the dead one, then up at all those watching, A kind of Mel Brooks gesture: "Hoo boy!" he says, "Now that's what I call really dead." O mortal Powers and princes of earth, and you immortal Lords of the underground and afterlife, Jehovah, Raa, Bol-Morah, Hecate, Pluto, What has a brilliant, living soul to do with Your harps and fires and boats, your bric-a-brac And troughs of smoking blood? Provincial stinkers, Our languages don'

A question about degrees in America and Canada? Hi, I know it's a little soon, but I'm looking at universities already (I'm 16) I'm in the UK and doing the IB Diploma at college, and I know that if I pass it completely I can go to any university I want to. I'm looking at going to universities in Scotland, Italy (so that I can improve my Italian), America and Canada. So far, I know that Scotland do Joint Honours degrees, and I haven't really started looking at italian universities yet (I'm going to ask my Italian teacher about the one he went to), but I got confused when I started looking at American and Canadian universities. I know from the media that American universities allow the students to do a Major and a Minor, or is that just the colleges? Can somebody please explain this in more detail for me? What kind of degrees do the Canadian universities do? Are they the same as the American courses? Also, I'd like to know what I can expect for the overseas/out-of-England acceptance process- will I have to go overseas for interviews, or will they send me a letter/e-mail saying I've been accepted/rejected? Thank you. G, xxx
Why do you think we hate you? What about your stereotipes about Italians? People asking to the italians why we hate americans? It is not true, the italians generally love America but your Mr. President has given a great contribution to change love in hate, friendship in rage and so on. By the way, can anyone tell me about the stupid stereotypes about italians (mafia, spaghetti, short and dark, cowards, waps, dagos) and why some americans (not all of course) in Italy are so arrogant? I am italian, former army NCO, I worked with US Forces for 25 years and, believe me, I know what I am talking about. Thanks to all. Well, I think that there is a misunderstanding. I am Italian, I love America and Americans, I don't like Bush and when an american asks me why the italians hate US people I really do not understand it. But I ask myself why americans have so many stupid stereotypes about Italy and Italians, why they think that dollar can buy everything, why they are so harsh in criticising us, loving anly our restaurants and pizzerias and forgetting about all the other things (arts, culture, civilization) that are the pillars of our nation? Meet an american in Florence asking for an information and saying in surprise "how is you speak english?" and after a while I asked friendly what did he like about Italy and Florence. Answer: yeah, pasta, buono! Ciao guys.

Why is it true to say that Italian immigrants became "Italian" in America and not in Italy? How did it happen? And what is racialization? How did it come to pass that "non-white" groups (e.g. eastern Europeans) became "white"?

Do people in South America have Italian ancestry? One of the Italian soccer stars Mauro Camoranesi is actually from Argentina. I have a friend from Chile who has a really full blown Italian name, its strange. Did Italians migrate to South America? Also, I notice that some Spaniards have Italian names like Cesc Fabregas. His name is Francesco. A lot of Spaniards have Italian last names like Vega and Castellano. What gives? Do Spaniards and Italians considers themselves to be somewhat similar people? Like Americans and Canadians?
Does "Latin" only refer to people from Latin America or do Spanish and Italians also count as Latin ? I always thought Latin refers to people from Latin America, but it seems also Spanish from Spain and even Italians are often referred to as Latin. I can understand because they speak Latin languages. But in the USA it's a bit strange because "Latinos" are normally regarded as non-whites whereas Spanish and Italians are white. Doesn't it get confusing? @1st lady : some of them are very white especially from the north of Italy and Spain. from the south they are darker skinned @1st lady: but caucasian means white. But I agree that some of them are very dark like Arabs. But some are very white too like German. So u can't really generalize

How are people from South America considered Latinos.....and Italians aren't? . "Latin is an ancient Indo-European language originally spoken in Latium, the region immediately surrounding Rome." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin The Roman empire with all its culture and language encompassed the entire Mediterranean Sea....The Romans never set foot in South America So just because the Spanish were conquered by the Romans and then the Spanish later on conquered South America, that makes anyone born in South America a "Latino"? Would a "Latino" consider someone from Corsica or Croatia a Latino?....Maybe even someone from Tunisia or Libya? ------------ Also from that same wikipedia article... "Italian is generally considered the purest descendant of Latin in terms of vocabulary, though Romanian more closely preserves the Classical declension system, and Sardinian is the most conservative in terms of phonology."
why do italians and blacks "glorify" crime in america compared to other groups? the key word here is "glorify". ex: italian mafia rappers

Italians were lynched and beaten in America, should Wright bring that up as well? Shouldnt he talk about how Italians were lynched and beaten, subjects of racism? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Italianism Italian immigrants were subject to extreme prejudice, racism, and, in many cases, violence. During the 1800s and early 20th Century, Italian Americans, being seen as non-Anglo and non-white, were the second most likely ethnic group to be lynched. [9] The largest mass lynching in American history involved the lynching of eleven Italians in the city of New Orleans. [10] The Italians, who were thought to have assassinated police chief David Hennessey, were baselessly arrested and placed in a jail cell before being brutally murdered by a lynch mob that stormed the jailhouse, with witnesses claiming that the cheers "were nearly deafening." Cries of "hang the dagos" were heard throughout the riot. Reporting on the incident, one newspaper reported "The little jail was crowded with Sicilians, whose low, receding foreheads, dark skin, repulsive countenances and slovenly attire proclaimed their brut I never heard an Italian catholic priest scream about their racism or say "GOD DAMN AMERICA" i know about the irish too, its seems all the immigrants who were discriminated against have moved on and dont whine there were eyewitnesses in the 1800's, that goes for other historical even like the American Indian Genocide.
What are the most active organized criminal elements in North America today? I hear some, like the Russians are thriving, the Italians are finished...and the Chinese...well, I don't know about them today, but I do know they were wild in the 70's and 80's. What's it like today? What about in Canada? Sorry, I watch too many TV shows!
what is a good place to move for someone who is sick of living in america? i want to move to another country, probably permanently or at least for a long period of time. i would like to live in a place that is relatively easy to move to. i'd prefer a place with nice warm weather, some place where i can live for cheap and find a job. i was thinking about italy but i heard it's virtually impossible for non-italians to find a job with a decent salary. also i've heard puerto rico is nice but supposedly the crime rate is very high. any ideas on good places to move?
For Italians: What would you think of an In-n-Out Burger in your country? In-n-Out Burger is a burger chain here on the west coast of America that makes fresh hamburgers and cheeseburgers. Their supplies are delivered every morning for the best tasting food possible. The question is: would In-n-Out work in an international market?
How many Caucasian people in south america? most Mexicans are not caucasian, but the population of Argentina is heavily made up of inhabitants of a white European background 97% , the largest being Italians and Spaniards, and Uruguay is heavily populated by people of European origin, 94% of its population is of white European descent.( what I studies from Wikipedia.com) so how many population are caucasian in south america.
Why is America giving itself to the world, severely impereling ourselves? If I stole something as menial and insipid as a candy bar I could be arrested. Why? Because it is a crime; a misdemeanor. So, if millions of foreigners invade our country illegally at great cost to our country and culture they should be considered criminals and enemies of the state. Large scale immigration (both illegal and legal) while 'supposedly' good in its intentions begins to erode the identity of the host nation. There is no good nor logical reason to import poverty, not to say that some who migrate aren't highly educated. We are not obligated to take care of the world, especially within our own borders. This is not the 19th and 20th centuries needed the Irish and Italians (I know I'm leaving a few groups out) to help build the infrastructure of this country. This current boom in immigration is dangerous and unnecessary. I don't care where they come from, if people want to live out there dreams they should try to change their country so that they may do so.
Are there Italians in Sydney? How are Australians? Im planning to study in sydney for a while and im from america. I grew up in italian family and speak the language. Is there many italians there? Wil I be welcomed in Sydney? How are the People/Australians? As for me, Im simple and relaxed person.
What should we get to share with Italians? My choir is making a trip to Italy next Friday, and we plan on giving a gift to every bus driver/tour guide we encounter. We would like the gift to represent something about America, but in a small price range. Any ideas?
What do Italians think of Olive Garden? authentic? Or close to the real thing? To clarify: in America it's hard for anything to be authentic. We have numerous corporate chains of Mexican and Italian food, as well as sushi and other dishes from far away lands. I laugh when I see Mexican cooks working in these places., Because #1 if your not taught by a prestigious cooking school, or taught from a real life Italian, then it's impossible to be authentic. Frozen, ready to make ingredients that are passed as food that might be believable. Unless it's a mom and pop shop with immigrants or family secrets passed down, then it's poor imitation. Anybody know what people coming over here think of these places that imitate your native dishes?
Has America bought into the stereotype that Muslims are terrorists ? I asked a similar question a few weeks ago and most people said they could seperate Islam from Al-Qaeda. However, there is always a negative association with Islam now. Barack Obama has to downplay his familie's Islamic roots and state that he is in fact a Christian. To attach that stigma to 1.8 billion people is like saying all conservative white men are in the KKK or all Italians are assosiated with the mafia. Have we fallen into the Bush administration's fear mongering trap ?
Who makes a better automobile, the Germans, the Italians, the Brits, or the Americans? Are you really proud of a Made in America vehicle? Do you look at a Volkswagen or a Mercedes and think "That's how you build a car!" ? The thought of a Ferrari sitting in your driveway is a total turn-on, but would you still feel comfortable driving one? Can the Brits make a production car and actually keep the companies from going belly up? It's no surprise that the Italians are fanatical about being fanatics about cars. But let's throw another stone into the pond: The Japanese. They have the most innovative and technological society on the planet. Remember, we're not talking about racing for pinks here...we're talking about overall--who makes a better car?
