How come people think Italians are "White People"? Italians are not white people at all, Italy is not even close to Europe so how can people call Italians white. Why do so many people think Italians are not white? It amazes me how many people I've come across only consider Italians to be marginally white, if at all. Many people seem to have this bizarre misperception that Italians are all black-haired, brown-eyed, and dark-skinned, when in reality Italians mostly have brown hair, light skin (many just tan well), and different eye colors. I'm mostly Italian-American myself, my father's full-blooded Sicilian and my mother has partial northern Italian (Florentine) ancestry. I have a brunet white/light olive skin tone (depending on sun exposure or personal opinion), green eyes, and very dark brown hair. I basically look like my father but he has hazel/brown eyes instead. He's also slightly more olive-skinned, but this is also partially because he's in the sun more than I am. My Sicilian relatives vary from fair to dark and my Florentine side was also full of brown hair, blue/green eyes, and fair skin. It just strikes me as odd that such a seemingly large number of people don't consider Italians white when most Italians don't look any different from someone from central/southern France, central Europe, or the Balkans. I also realize that Sicilians and Calabrians (from the far southern mainland) tend to be darker than the average, but even Italians from these regions are not as dark as they're made out to be. Thoughts or opinions? @Josh: All due respect I think you may be the one that needs to learn some history. Not "black DNA" but some North African Arab/Berber ancestry is present in some Sicilians. These people are Caucasian and rather light-skinned, even if a bit darker than most Europeans. In fact, back when the Arabs (Moors) ruled Sicily, they were lighter than how they look now. Today's North Africans are typically a shade or two darker on average because they have sub-Saharan admixture due to centuries of slave trading. Sub-Saharan admixture in Sicilians only exists in very small quantities, which is the case for all European populations. @Safety pin: You made some valid points. It is in fact true that most Italian-Americans descend from southerners, and Sicilians figured prominently. But what I'm saying is most Sicilians also aren't even that dark. Look at Al Pacino for instance, I consider him pretty typical for Sicily. Although I will certainly say that some Sicilians look like lighter-skinned Arabs from coastal North Africa or the Levant (including a few of my relatives) of all the invaders/conquerors who came to Sicily, the Ancient Greeks had the biggest impact on the gene pool. Far more Sicilians look Greek than Arab. This is also reflected in how my family looks. I've been told I look Greek several times, and upon doing some research on my surname, it appears likely that it may in fact be of Greek origin. When the Arabs conquered Sicily, they ruled over a largely Greek population even though there was some immigration from North Africa. Also, after Moorish rule ended in Sicily with the Norman conquest in 1071 or so, the Normans brought colonists from Italy and France to repopulate the island, which declined during the war. Certainly some of the Muslim Arabs were assimilated into Latin culture and Catholicism, but others left. Sicilian Greeks also assimilated into Latin culture. @Ali: In my book, most Middle Eastern people are also Caucasian to me. Maybe that's also because I've seen a few who look fairly similar to myself, but most of them look far more like Europeans than like any other human group. That said, most Italians really do look like their immediate European neighbors. Outside of Sicily and Calabria, people who look similar to light Middle Easterners are far less common.

Why are italians discriminated in England and why dont the British consider them white?

Italians Are NOT White!? Iam italian and which ever idiot who started to call it italians white are on CRACK, i don't care what people think of us, we know we aren't our skin isn't white, our culture is different do you see white people going around and having ''little white'' like little italy NO, white people tend to cluster with white people, every race tends to cluster together in one way or another, black people live in black areas, hispanics live in hispanic areas, then the white people all live any where cause they are a majority, asians have china town,ect,ect.. Italians aren't white. Who cares some italians appear to have white skin, does that mean they are white no! Michael Jackson has white skin is he white, no hes black, his family is black, there for the majority of italians have darker skin, WE are OLIVE, every italian south of rome has a ''slight'' olive tint you may not notice it but they have it if you look closesly, Italians have darker hair, darker eyes darker skin = NOT WHITE! and you can tell the difference between an italian person and a white person by looking at there face we italians have different facial features than white people, we are not white WHITE AND ITALIAN ARE 2 COMPLETELY DIFFERNT THINGS! We were racially harrased on the arrival to the americas because of our skin, White people are plain, they are boring and don't care about where they come from, italians are not white i dont care what you say as long as i know my skin is not white, and i don't look white. IAM ITALIAN NOT WHITE! EUROPE IS A CONTINENT NOT A RACE! italians look much different from other people in europe, i don't care you can say other europeans have an olive type skin, italians look different, and to you other italian poster in here why would you want to classified as the same thing as white people you're just a white wanna be, go suck some white dick. I have Italian neighbors who are offended by being considered "white"? They take serious offense to being called white and MUST be reffered to as Italian.They are very prideful people and the kids are 1st generation Americans who also feel the same way. They feel as though the genetic makeup of "true Italian people" is too broad to be considered one race and that white Europeans contributed very little to the ethnicity of Italians. They have pretty dark skin and course hair. I heard something about North African DNA being very prominent in Italians from certain regions because Africans travelled there on trading routes and vice versa and some settled, causing the cultures to "mix" over the centuries. What do you think of this? Are they being picky and difficult or just plain old prideful?

Since when did Italians in America become white? I even hear them saying it themselves. I'm a real Italian like from Italy. I'm not white at all. I look more hispanic than white. When Italians first came to America, it was the white people who clowned them for... well, not being white like them. Why did they accept being called white. White people don't even like me, I'm not calling myself white. How could I be white, I'm not atheist.

Italians are white, I'm white!? I feel like Italians are white even sicillians. My grandma is sicillian and looks pure white, some of her brothers and sisters are on the darker side but still look white. I'm italian, and just like any other italian mark white or of european ansectry on any school test and/or any type of paperwork. I know not anybody is literally actually WHITE but you know what I mean. If you were to come straight from italy or say sweeden youd say you were italian or sweedish not white but if your family live in america for a while youd be considered white. Just like romanians, bulgarians, greeks, etc. who are on the darker side. people through out europe are all different shades of white just like black people are all different shades of black. I was having a discussion with someone today who listens to what he describes as "goth/electronic" music, lol, and I just added to the conversation that in the past few years there have been quite a few bands that come within that spectrum of music come out of Italy, and it's quite popular. He looked at me as if I was joking, and then seemed a bit surprised, he said something to the effect of "How can they be "goth", they're tan". I replied that on the whole, the average Italian isn't a whole lot darker than the average Brit, and there are many are many Italians that have blonde hair and blue eyes. He wasn't have any of it, and wasn't prepared to accept that Italians are white. He thought the suggestion that Italians were white was absurd. I wasn't going to get into a full out argument with him, because you'll never change some people, but it's amazing how many people in Britain think that Italians are like Arabs. People have this image of the average Italian as having jet black hair, dark skin, dark eyes, and it's simply not true. If you walk around any typical British town, you'll see completely English people who look no different to the average Italian, many British people have as dark a skin tone as some Italians. I am White British and have blue eyes and light brown hair, but when I visited Italy there were many people who I would say were no darker than me, and I'm pretty light skinned. What are you opinions on the matter?

why do people refer to asians, italians, and latins as not of the white race? I mean they are all white. Some just have tan skin just like some white people do. What is the difference? Do you consider Italians to be "white"? I'd like to take an informal poll... People often ask me, "What race are you?" I often get mistaken for Hispanic, Lebanese, Greek, almost anything... I'm actually Sicilian. When I lived in NYC, most Italian-Americans considered themselves to be white. Now that I live in Minnesota, however, most people here don't seem to consider Italians to be be white. I'm curious to see what you think. To clarify, I know that this isn't a very important issue, it's just something I'm curious about. I'd just like to know-- in your mind, how would do you categorize an Italian-American person?
