What is it like for Italians living amongst the mafia?

It must be weird living in a country with so many mafia? How out of control are they, if you started a new business for example would you have the mafia demanding protection money etc? Do italians live in fear of the mafia, how much control do they have?? Or is the mafia situation not that bad?

1. I lived in Italy for 2 years and never noticed the mafia. They are underground (meaning everything they do is secret). Only in Naples people have some issues with the mafia because Naples is the main center for the Italian mafia. But honestly, I never saw any mafia activity when I lived there. And I have tons of Italian friends and stuff and they never notice the mafia. It all depends where you live. And no, if you open a business they won't come and destroy the business for protection money. Thats all hollywood.
